History of Morrisville
Morrisville has a
proud history. The first resident of the area known as Morrisville today was a man by the name of Jeremiah Morris, who named his small settlement after himself. In hopes of drawing people to his town, Morris donated some land to the North Carolina Railroad in 1852. Soon after this, the railroad built a water station and various other buildings on the property.
The railroad ran from Goldsboro to Charlotte and catered to such places as Morrisville, Cary, Garner and Auburn. Morris' plan for growth was successful, and by the year 1880, the town had a population of 165 people. At this time, Morrisville was home to a post office, several general stores, two churches, a sawmill, four doctor's offices, a hotel, a cabinetmaking shop and a lawyers office.
The town has grown quite a bit since its early days adding several businesses and lovely Morrisville NC homes, with a population close to 20,000 people. Morrisville was first chartered in 1875; however, it was disincorporated in 1933. The citizens repealed this decision, which resulted in the town being re-chartered in 1947.
