Raleigh NC Real Estate, Raleigh area and Community Information

Raleigh, North Carolina, is a rapidly growing city that is home to about 425,000 individuals. This state capital is the home of North Carolina State University and Shaw University. Together with Durham and Chapel Hill, Raleigh is part of the so-called "Research Triangle." The name is derived from Research Triangle Park. The total population of these three cities and their suburbs now exceeds two million.

History

The city was named after Sir Walter Raleigh, who was credited with establishing the Roanoke Colony in what is Dare County today. Raleigh was a planned community laid out in a grid pattern back in the 18th century. The state capitol building and Union Square were placed at the center of the grid. Raleigh was first named the state capital in 1788, and the city was incorporated in 1792.

Prior to the American Revolution, New Bern was the capital of North Carolina. When the British attacked New Bern, governing from the city became impossible. Raleigh's inland location rendered coastal attacks impossible, so it was ultimately selected to become the new state capital.
