History

The area was only sparsely settled when Dr. Calvin Jones purchased 615 forested acres here in 1820. He later sold the land to a Baptist organization that developed Wake Forest College on the site. The school and the surrounding community received a boost when the Raleigh & Gaston Railroad arrived in 1840. The town of Wake Forest College was incorporated in 1880. In 1909, the word "college" was dropped from the name.

The Falls Lake State Recreation Area is a 30,000-acre state park that offers those with Wake Forest NC homes a great escape. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built a dam across the Neuse River to control flooding. After construction concluded in 1981, Falls Lake began to form.
